Don Medlin, President & CEO
Don Medlin is President & CEO of Scarbrough-Medlin Associates, a regional independent insurance agency located in Plano, Texas. Don started his career with the Gulf Insurance Group in Dallas and quickly established himself as an Underwriter’s underwriter in a home office product management capacity. He later joined Excalibur Insurance Company where he specialized in alternative risk financing programs for a complete risk management view of the Property & Casualty Insurance market.
In 1982 Don formed Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc with a well-recognized Alexander & Alexander broker, Paul Scarbrough, in Dallas Texas. Today, Scarbrough Medlin is one of the largest independent insurance agencies within the South Central U.S.
Medlin has volunteered his time to a number of Insurance Industry, civic, and community organizations and has served on Texas Mutual, Lone Star, Service Lloyds, Amerisure, Fireman’s Fund and America First Insurance Company advisory boards. He is a former President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas and a two-term director of the Independent Agents of Dallas, where he also served as President from 1995-96.
His commitment to the Dallas/Ft.Worth community extends to his involvement with the Dallas Ecological Foundation, Texas Civil Justice League, Game Conservation Foundation, American Red Cross, Sportsmen’s Club of Dallas, and Center for Non-Profit Management, Dallas Safari Club, Dallas Victims Outreach, Marcus High School Golf Boosters Club, Director, Equitable Bank, and Northwood Country Club.
Medlin received his BBA degree from the University of North Texas and his MBA degree from the University of Dallas. He is also Chairman of the Glen Taylor Endowed Chair Committee for the University of North Texas, which is responsible for fundraising and outreach to the Insurance Community. He spends time in the classroom and serves as a resource to students interested in careers in the Insurance Industry. Medlin also has received a Distinguished Alumni Award by the University Of North Texas School Of Business. He is also a member of the Presidents Council, Advisory Board for School of Business and Honored as a Distinguished Lecturer.
Rod Medlin, Vice President / Chief Operating Officer
Rod Medlin has 30 years insurance experience. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Management from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and an Accredited Advisor in Insurance designation from the Insurance Institute of America. He has four years’ experience with a major commercial property and casualty insurer with emphasis in heavy industry, construction and energy-related risk. Rod has served as Administrator of a self-insured program for a large commercial risk, and immediately before joining Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, he was Account Executive for the largest commercial insurance agency in Oklahoma. Rod has taught Licensing Courses for the Independent Insurance Agents of Oklahoma at Oklahoma University and The University of Tulsa.
Rod served as Founding Chairman of the Amerisure Insurance Companies Agents Advisory Board and on the advisory boards of both The Texas Mutual Insurance Company and Liberty National Insurance Company. He has served as the Crime and Fidelity Risk Management Consultant to the Institute of Real Estate Management/National Board of Realtors in Chicago, Illinois, where he structured and instituted IREM's National Crime & Fidelity Program for Accredited Management Organization (AMO) designated firms. Rod has also served on the Board of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Dallas and as Regional Vice President for Political Action for the Independent Insurance Association of Texas. Additionally, he served as Vice President for the Stonebridge Ranch Community Association and as Director for a large non-profit game conservation organization. He is currently serving as a member of the FM Global National Advisory Council as well as in a similar capacity for America First Insurance Companies. In the past he has acted as a Director of the Board on the Lone Star Insurance Company. He currently serves as a Partner in Texas Construction Partners, LLC and as President of the Texas Construction Insurance Risk Retention Group.
Matt Aripoli, Vice President / Sales and Developement
Graduated from Missouri State University with a BA in English/Political Science. He began his career with Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates in 2003 as a commercial property and casualty producer. After 8 successful years with SMA he moved on to further his insurance expertise and pursue a different opportunity. He returned to SMA in 2014 as a VP of Sales and Development. Matt earned his CIC in designation in 2010 and is committed to the continuing education of all SMA Staff. His areas of expertise are, but not limited to, hospitality, manufacturing, technology, property, wholesale, construction, healthcare, and professional exposures. He is an active in many associations and organizations including Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas, Building Owner's and Manager's Association, Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Frisco Chamber, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni, Kansas University Alumni, Missouri State Alumni, and All Saints catholic Community. Matt is dedicated to designing comprehensive risk management program, keeping costs at a minimum and concentrating on customer service to meet all of his client’s needs.
Alex Medlin, Account Executive
Alex Medlin followed his family's footsteps by joining Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates as a producer in January of 2012. Alex graduated from Texas Tech University in the fall of 201 l with a Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media & Communication, and brings a multi-faceted approach to commercial insurance through his education in creative media, social media, marketing, and general communication skills and technologies.
Alex cut his teeth managing and providing customer service to an extensive book of horneowner's associations, gaining well-rounded experience in the various roles involved in the commercial insurance business. After serving homeowner's associations, he moved his sights to high rise and midrise condominium associations, eventually working his way into the school district business.
Alex's upbringing in commercial habitation insurance doesn't limit his production versatility, as he has Scarbrough, Medlin's resources, and the capability, to write any commercial entity to be desired by a potential client. Alex is currently involved with the llAD and the IIAD's Young Agents Committee.
Carolyn Gilbert, Account Executive
Carolyn Gilbert joined Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc. in 1992 as an Account Executive, bringing with her 25 years of commercial insurance experience. Prior to joining the agency, she served as a commercial property specialist for a large brokerage facility and as commercial accounts manager for a local independent agency. She has been in production since 1986 servicing medium-to-large commercial accounts. Carolyn has a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation.
Bill McGinnis, Senior Vice President - Public Utilities
Bill McGinnis is Senior Vice President and Leader of Public Utilities. He has spent 35 years with Electric Cooperatives and has been responsible for oversight of the P/C program. Because of this history and experience, valuable knowledge is available in selecting and evaluating coverages and product required by cooperatives. He is very familiar with carriers and the history of P/C insurance programs, as they have flowed down to the electric cooperatives over the past 40 years. He is also very familiar with operations and culture within this industry and is capable of addressing problems or situations that might arise. This full understanding of the cooperative program also provides an advantage in working with the underwriters to explain different facets of the electric utility business.
Carl Smith, Senior Vice President - Educational Entities
Carl Smith joined Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc. in November of 1997 as an Account Executive. Having over 45 years of experience in public school management, he is responsible for analyzing and recommending cost effective programs for various public entities including school districts, charter schools, cities, and counties. With access to the majority of leading industry markets, including both quality standard companies as well as cost saving inter-local pools, he is able to provide state-of-the-art programs that promote long-term retention, financial health, and program stabilization. The resulting significant cost savings has contributed to 98% member retention.
Carl has extensive administrative management experience, having spent nineteen years in the central office of a large 5A school district, with responsibility in instruction, facility design/management and personnel and employee benefits. In his most recent experience as Executive Director of Personnel, Carl was responsible for all day-to-day operations in the recruitment, employment, training, and compensation for all auxiliary and professional personnel in the district.
Carl received both his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Education (1968) and Masters of Science in Public Education Degree (1976) from the University of North Texas. Additional coursework has been completed at Oklahoma State University and Stephen F. Austin University. Carl has completed all required coursework for the Doctorate of Education from both the University Of North Texas and Texas A&M University at Commerce. He holds his Property and Casualty General Lines Agent (Texas) license.
Daniel Holt, Account Executive
Daniel is a graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Sociology and a double minor in Risk Management and Business Management. After graduating in 2011 he started his career as a workers' compensation underwriter at Dallas National Insurance. In 2012, he stepped into the independent agent world with Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc. as an Account Executive. As an independent agent, he offers his clients a variety of products and companies that fit their unique insurance needs. Daniel also graduated from the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) Commercial Lines School. He is a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas as well as a member of the Young Agents of Dallas.
Steve Frisch, Director, Financial Services
Steve has 31 years of experience in the life and health insurance field. He attended The University of Nebraska majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. He began his insurance career in 1978 with Liberty Mutual and Connecticut General. He holds his Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) designation.
In 1982, Steve began his management career as Regional Vice President for a California based third party administrator and supervised a 16 state region specializing in marketing a proprietary small group health insurance product. From there he became Marketing Vice President for a Midwestern life insurance company. In 1994, Steve formed an agency that was a wholly owned subsidiary of a local hospital and built a community health plan that directed people to the local hospital by way of the PPO network
One of the main areas of focus for Financial Services is assisting employers with providing top quality employee health benefits that are compliant with the Affordable Care Act, yet affordable in cost to both employers and their employees. We have very creative products/programs not readily available to most brokers in the area that hold the line on costs while providing excellent benefits.
Steve joined Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc. in 2002 as an Account Executive specializing in worksite marketing and individual life sales and he concurrently leads the Financial Services Department. He has a strong reputation for excellent customer service coupled with his consultative approach to advising clients.
Michelle Warden, Account Executive
Joined Scarbrough, Medlin and Associates in 2015 is the practice leader for Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates Homeowners Association program. Along with running the HOA program she focuses on manufacturer’s wholesale/distribution to veterinary practices. Prior to joining Scarbrough, Medlin and Associates, Michelle spent eight successful years with a Fortune 500 company as a property & casualty and life & health producer.
Michelle graduated from Tarleton State University with a bachelors in Business Administration. She is an active member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas, Independent Insurance Agents of Texas, Frisco Chamber of Commerce, Community Association Institute – Dallas chapter and Community Association Institute – Phoenix chapter.

Candy Redding, Account Executive
Is the Utility Group Account Manager and has over 40 years’ experience in the insurance industry. Candy also handles large construction business, condominium and homeowner’s association business. She has knowledge of the company level from having worked as an underwriter for admitted companies, as well as, excess and surplus lines. Approximately half of her experience has been with independent agencies and includes over fifteen years with Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc.
Larry Johnson, Account Executive
Larry is a veteran of over 10 years in providing top level service to his clients. He is a specialist in designing both individual and group health plans that provide the best possible benefits for the lowest possible cost. He is also well versed in designing life insurance products that provide guaranteed premiums with guaranteed benefits.
Bill Brown, Account Executive
Bill Brown joined Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates, Inc. in 2002. Bill has an extensive property and casualty background. Following graduation from the University of Texas, Austin, Bill spent 21 years with a leading east coast insurance company. His managerial duties were focused in large account production and underwriting. Bill joined the agency ranks in 1974 and served as President and COO during the development of a large Dallas agency. His duties were focused in large account development and service. Bill has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Medina Children's Home for 40 years. He and his family are actively involved in their church.
